Apple purchases Intrinsity, just 498 more ARM licensees to go
With P.A. Semi under its belt, and now “people familiar with the deal” reporting to The New York Times that a purchase of Intrinsity is a go, Apple’s march to ARM preeminence is becoming much more clear. A rumor about an Intrinsity purchase surfaced a few weeks ago when the processor design firm’s website went down and a few of its employees switched their LinkedIn employee status over to Apple, but now we’ve got some solid confirmation — though Apple and Intrinsity are still staying tight-lipped about the deal. Intrinsity’s rumored contribution to the iPad’s A4 chip is a modified A8 core it designed dubbed the Hummingbird, which squeezes 1GHz of performance out of a chip regularly limited to a mere 650MHz. It’s unlikely that this acquisition will shed much more light on the internals of the iPad or future Apple devices — in fact, it might help obfuscate them — but it’s clear that Apple is dead set on owning as much IP and “smart people” in relation to ARM as it can muster. Of course, the next big rumor on this front is a purchase of ARM itself, but that’s an entirely different can of worms.

Horus coffee table/iPod dock will make friends question your sanity
Hey, you know that whole Silent Hill design theme you’ve been aiming for, with the faceless nurse mannequins scattered about and the constantly running fog machine? We think we’ve found a coffee table for you. It’s (naturally) called the Horus and its made of “ultra-high performance concrete,” offering a spot for you to dock your iPod or iPhone on top, a pair of speakers down below, and an illuminated glass plane bisecting the thing. It’s the creation of designer Stephane Thivend and, while it doesn’t appear to be available in red nor does it come with a giant sword, it would certainly serve as a visual symbol of your guilt over spending so much on high-concept furniture.

Rhapsody for iPhone updated, now takes its music offline (in a good way)
We heard back in mid-March that Rhapsody for iPhone was getting an offline mode for downloading music and playing at times of no reception (like most subway rides). Good news, folks, today is the day the app get this coveted update. Lest we forget, too, with this summer’s OS 4 release finally enables background music, Real’s aural offering just got even more enticing. Police investigating lost iPhone prototype raid Gizmodo editor’s home
The backstory of the lost fourth-gen iPhone prototype acquired by Gizmodo last week is certainly already the stuff of some legend, but hold on tight, because it just got even wilder: Giz editor Jason Chen’s house was apparently raided by California’s REACT computer crimes task force under the authority of a search warrant on Friday night and his computers and several other items were seized. That means a criminal investigation led by the San Mateo police and district attorney is almost certainly in full swing, which is, well, crazy. As you know, we published images of the iPhone prototype last Saturday, so we’re tracking this story as closely as we know all of you are. For now hang tight and we’ll share more info as we get it.
Update: TechCrunch reports that the investigation is on hold for now following claims by Gawker that Chen should be protected under California’s Shield Laws, meant to help protect journalists from revealing sources. The District Attorney will reportedly reevaluate whether those laws do apply, and as such will not go through the seized possessions until a decision’s been reached in the coming days.

Wi-Fi Sync: wirelessly sync the iPhone with iTunes… in your dreams (video)
Hey iPhone, welcome to 2007. Following Opera’s script in building grassroots hysteria to goad Apple into approving a contentious app, developer Greg Hughes is teasing a video of his Wi-Fi Sync app to the peoples of planet internet. As the name implies, the app promises a complete sync of your iPhone or iPod touch with iTunes without having to tether and looks pretty straightforward (and occasionally useful) based on the video demonstration found after the break. Greg says he’ll be submitting it to Apple for approval at the end of the week — good luck with that Greg, we hope to be seeing you on Cydia at the very least.

Here’s how to install Android on your iPhone 2G
Last week, planetbeing claimed he’d ported Android to the iPhone. This week, Android A Lot says you can, too. If you’ve got an original iPhone 2G handy, there’s now a 68-step guide that can walk you through the entire process. In a nutshell, you’ll use iPhone Explorer to copy over the Android files, then turn your Mac or PC into an Ubuntu virtual machine to install the OpeniBoot software. When you’re done, you’ll probably have a dual-booting iPhone that can swap between iPhone OS and an experimental version of Android 1.6 at startup, but don’t quote us on that — we haven’t had a chance to test the unholy matrimony for ourselves. We’re going to try to give this a shot next week, and we’ll report back from the other side… if there is another side. Google Maps Navigation could come to iPhone, other platforms soon
Ooh, goodie! Try as we may, we’ve yet to really find a (good) free alternative to Google Maps Navigation on the iPhone, and while Navigon’s MobileNavigator gets our highest recommendations in the paid GPS department, Google’s own turn-by-turn option is just about enough to make any iPhone-toting traveler jump ship and snag an Android handset. Thankfully for us all, it seems as if this predicament won’t be nearly as trying in the near future, with the company’s own Steve Lee confirming to TechRadar that Google Maps Navigation would be coming to “other platforms” in due time. MacUser specifically mentions the solution coming to iPhone OS, and frankly, we couldn’t think of a better app to ship alongside version 4.0 than this. You’re good at taking hints, right Goog?
