Think Hyundai’s 70-inch multitouch table concept is hot stuff? Have a gander at this. The Table Connect for iPhone is dangerously close to completion, with a full-on mockup shown above. Put simply, this 58-inch multitouch surface accepts iPhone 4 connections via a 30-pin Dock Connector, and with a bit of magic, the table becomes your iPhone. The crew is currently wrapping up an alpha software release, and while a jailbroken iPhone is obviously necessary to get things going, the end result is bound to be impressive. Or at least hilarious. Here’s hoping these eventually go on sale, but for now, feel free to hit the source link for one more shot and a slew of diagrams.

Apple, Gemalto working on integrated SIM for next iPhone?
Moving from regular SIMs to micro SIMs for the iPad and iPhone 4 was a fairly user-hostile move on Apple’s part, seeing how it made moving between an iPhone and virtually any other GSM device quite a bit more difficult; the official explanation (for the iPhone 4, anyway) was that there simply wasn’t room for a regular SIM, but that seems unlikely considering that you’re only saving 10mm of length, 3mm of width, and 0mm of thickness. A more plausible scenario is that Apple viewed micro SIMs as a way to get ahead of the industry curve a bit and make it unpleasant for users to try to share an iPhone line with other devices, a concept that gets at the core of Apple’s mantra of owning the entire ecosystem from end to end.
But could they be trying to take that concept another step further? GigaOM is reporting a rumor today that Apple is working tightly with security firm Gemalto — you know, the SIM guys — to integrate software-reconfigurable SIMs right into European iPhones that would be activated on the carrier of your choice using an App Store download. Why European models? Multiple carriers offer the iPhone in a number of European countries, so distribution is a bit more complicated there than it is in the US, though it’s a reasonable leap to suggest that the same integrated SIMs would be use on new North American iPhones as well. From Apple’s perspective, it’s a win-win: trying to use your iPhone line with another device would be akin to pulling teeth, and more importantly, Apple wouldn’t need to worry about bundling carrier-specific SIMs with devices. In fact, the move would make Apple’s (and the consumer’s) interactions with the carrier entirely virtual, all the way from manufacture to activation. Seems like the plan would require an extraordinary amount of buy-in from carriers who’ve become increasingly suspicious of Apple’s goals lately — but then again, they managed to get carriers to suddenly and rapidly deploy micro SIMs en masse, and if anyone could pull this off, it’d be Steve’s boys and girls.

Apple delays white iPhone 4 into spring 2011
Let’s just be honest, Apple: white stuff is impossible to manufacture. In fact, scientists have yet to prove that white even exists, so we’re not sure why you’re bothering to try to make a phone out of it! That’s right: after a missed availability date in July and another delay after that, Cupertino has once again pushed back the manufacture of the palest iPhone 4 — this time clear into spring of 2011. It won’t say why, but in all likelihood, they’re still dealing with the same manufacturing woes they’ve had from the start. By the time mid-2011 rolls around, it seems probable that the release will be butting up against news of the iPhone 4’s successor — or at the very least, a CDMA version of the phone — so it’ll be fascinating to see how this timeline unfolds. In the meantime, yeah… might want to give up the wait and go for black.

iDOS emulator hits the App Store, gets pulled in record time
You know what they say. You snooze, you miss out on a DOS emulator in the Apple App Store. That rare and unimaginable occurrence happened earlier today, when the so-called iDOS emulator was briefly available for both the iPhone and iPad before it was unsurprisingly pulled from the store a short time ago. That wasn’t before it was seen spotted running Windows 3.0 and even some classic Sierra adventure games, though — head on past the break for the evidence.

Sonos Wireless Dock for iPod and iPhone is out now for $119
And now we’re at a crossroads. Apple is about to start hitting the wireless media streaming game hard with AirPlay and an armada of third party manufacturers. Meanwhile, Sonos is improving its already impressive streaming ecosystem with a now-shipping Sonos Wireless Dock (WD100) for your iPod or iPhone that can stream your device’s music digitally to any of your Sonos ZonePlayers. It’s not that bad a buy at $119, especially if you already have a big investment in Sonos. Plus, Sonos has plenty of other perks (like great support for online streaming music services) that it would be happy to point out to you. Still, we can’t help but wonder what this sort of product will look like in an AirPlay-contoured market, say, one year from now.

White iPhone 4 evidence shows up in Apple Store app’s update?
So, you may or may not have noticed that this morning, Apple updated its own Apple Store app for the very first time, and version 1.1 has a little surprise. That’s right, in the ‘Reserve Products’ screen, the much delayed white iPhone 4 shows up as an option. Now, before you lose control of yourself, keep in mind that you can’t actually reserve one… yet. Of course, this could just be some sort of cruel glitch in the system, or it could be a tiny bit of evidence that the white iPhone is actually, finally on its way. At the very least, we know that Apple’s still thinking of it… just like us.
Update: Apple’s now removed the white iPhone 4 references, but don’t worry: we’ll always have that screen grab.

iOS 4.1 glitch lets you bypass lock screen to access Phone app, photo album (video)
Your iPhone’s passcode entry can’t block everything, it seems — at least not with iOS 4.1. We’re hearing various reports that simply inputting a random number in the emergency call field, pressing call, and then promptly hitting the hardware lock button will take you to the Phone app, thereby granting you access to the call history, voicemail, and address book. We’ve tried this with iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4, all with the same result. We can’t get out of the field without trying to place a call, and after that we’re still stuck back at the passcode screen. Additionally, selecting “share contact” and then the camera icon will give you access to the photo album. Pay mind that your particularly paranoid pals could probably use this to see if you really did stop calling your ex and delete all his or her pictures. We won’t judge, but they will. Video proof of concept after the break.
Update: Feel free to hold down the menu button to access voice control and play some locally-stored tunes while you’re at it. And if you’ve got 4.2 beta like some of our staffers do, this “trick” should work just the same.

Viper SmartStart app goes to 2.0, gets potentially cheaper and throws roadside assistance into the mix
About a year ago Viper got into the app game, releasing SmartStart the iPhone and allowing control of the locks, trunk, and ignition on their car. Since then Android and BlackBerry versions have trickled out, but now it’s time for 2.0. What wondrous new functionality does this new major release offer? Not much, really, but it does come with one major improvement: cost. Before you were out at least $299 while the new version is said to cost as little as $199 according to the PR below, though the wording is awfully vague. PR states you can find “dealers advertising Viper SmartStart as low as $199,” but under Viper’s 2.0 site the MSRP is stated to be $299 — the same as before. So, YMMV on the price cut, apparently depending on what your local dealer feels like charging, but know that whatever you pay you’ll now get “Viper Motor Club” roadside assistance included. That should offer a little extra peace of mind as we enter dead battery season.

VLC downsized to fit on the iPhone and iPod touch, now playing in the App Store
If you like your players orange and portable but don’t have a tablet, you may be in luck. The VLC Media Player app, which recently made the iPad a little more codec-friendly, is now available in the App Store for the iPhone (4 and 3GS) and iPod touch. This new version is also said to support even more file types, offer better performance, and allows for the deletion of files right through its own interface. It’s available now, so get downloading — your classic cartoons await.

Found Footage: iPhone costume update includes working 40" LCD
In 2007, we saw the first generation iPhone in some comically large costumes (video on the next page). Last year we brought you the footage of Reko and John sporting giant TV screens with jailbroken iPhones powering the costumes. They used “updated” iPhones, but still sported square edges and no touchscreen interfaces. This year John Savio goes it alone with an updated, touchscreen iPhone 4 costume that’s the best we’ve seen.
With a light on the back to simulate the LED camera light, a 40-inch LED LCD panel strapped to sandwich board and a 12-volt battery, the entire rig weighs 75 pounds. Quite a way to work off all that candy. Watch a painfully awkward yet strangely adorable video of the costume on the next page.
